Translating Wor(l)ds
This course offers advanced bilingual students from 6th-9th grade the opportunity to put their linguistic skills and knowledge to use as translators. The course will focus on translation as a cultural practice, offering written and oral exercises involving both literary and practical translation, and also further EBGIS’ contributions to Klexikon, an online lexicon for and by young learners (Klexikon is a multilingual, open-source, Wikipedia-like project for students). Students will engage in translation exercises using both English- and German-language source texts from a variety of materials ranging from music and poetry to contemporary news and culture. Successful translation projects may be also submitted for publication in a range of print and online sources, and students will gain firsthand experience in online self-publication through our involvement with the Klexikon project. This course may also include webinars with contemporary multilingual writers from both the English- and German-speaking worlds.
